Your Guide to Supermoon Rituals

In August 2023, there will be not one but two full moons–and they are both supermoons! The first will occur on Tuesday, August 1st, and the second on August 30th. In this article, I explain how you can use personal practices to increase the potency of the supermoon's powers.​

What is the significance of a full moon?​

A full moon occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun. A full moon is the perfect time for releasing what no longer serves you. It is essential to use this time to discharge negative energy, clear your space, and cleanse the energy within and around you.​

A full moon has the power to strengthen intuition, making it an opportune time to recognize any imbalances in your life and let go of whatever might be causing instability.​

Yoga, Reiki, meditation, journaling, and other energy-centered practices can be beneficial to strengthen your intuition and harness the moon's energy. ​

What is a supermoon?​

A supermoon is when the moon is closest to the Earth, meaning its energy is most potent. Not all full moons are supermoons; there are usually 3-4 in a year. As mentioned, two supermoons are in August this year.

Using yoga for your full moon ritual​

Full moons can bring our feelings and emotions to the surface. Yoga promotes relaxation of the mind and body, making it a great way to relieve emotional unrest from this moon phase. Yoga helps to release tension in the physical and energetic body. For example, hip-centric poses are a great way to purge trauma stored in the hips. "Twists" are another great way to detoxify during this time. ​

10 practices to incorporate into your Supermoon ritual:​

1. Yoga flow- completing a flow of restorative hip opening poses and gentle twists can help you release any physical tension or energetic blockages that your body is holding. ​

2. Journal- "I am releasing..." or set an intention for the moon phase by writing it down.​

3. Place crystals on the windowsill to soak up the moon's energy.​

4. Get Creative! Dance, sing, play an instrument, paint, or draw- it's important to get in touch with your emotions through creativity during full moons.​

5. Out with the old- get rid of anything taking up space. Clean out your fridge or closet.​

6. Clear the energy in your space with sage or palo santo.​

7. Schedule a Reiki session to release blockages and restore groundedness. ​

8. Use meditation to release fears stored in the Root chakra.​

9. Take a bath-detoxify your physical body and soothe tired muscles with Epsom salt.​

10. Affirmations in the mirror, such as "I release what no longer serves me."​
