When first beginning to learn the tarot, understanding numerology and the minor arcana helps tremendously in grasping the concept of each card's meaning. Originating during the 15th century in Italy, Tarrochi, now known as Tarot, was created as a fun card game to play with others. It was from Tarrochi that we had cards such as the Emperor and Empress, and they later evolved into the cards we know and love today. This blog will assist you in understanding the general idea and meaning behind each card so that you can better utilize the tarot’s potential!

What are "Pip Cards"?

The cards in the minor arcana are usually more difficult for the beginner reader to understand than those in the major arcana. The minor arcana consists of 4 suits with cards numbered 1-10 and additional “court cards.” In this article, we will delve into the numbered cards from the minor arcana which have been affectionately named “pip cards.”

Minor Arcana Suits

Understanding the different suits in the minor arcana is a crucial starting point in learning the meanings of each pip card. While the major arcana feature cards such as The Tower, The Lovers, or Death represent major turning points/themes in one’s life, the minor arcana comprises four different suits that generate the specific details and individuals that may assist in our growth.

Wands

Wands are associated with the element of fire and concern themselves with themes of action, passion, sexuality, and movement. Wands prompt the beginning, or initial spark, to the story we embark on within our lives. This energy is exciting, often resulting in new beginnings or ends.

Swords

Swords are associated with the element of air and are associated with thoughts, fear, intellect, and conflict. While swords may sometimes be daunting within a reading, they allow us to understand the obstacles in our growth, whether physical or mental.

Cups

You guessed it; cups are associated with the element of water and indicate emotions, healing, love, and fulfillment. The beautiful cups allow us to understand our emotions and status. Although they may be tough to swallow, cups are essential in understanding our growth and mental capacity.

Pentacles

Pentacles are associated with the element of earth and are powerful as they deal with matters of the physical world. Stability, work, money, health, and home are all topics that concern themselves with pentacles. Whether it is good fortune or a new business endeavor, pentacles help prepare us for the many opportunities we will receive.
